Stan Wiltons match report v Dronfield Town Reserves

07 August 2018

In searing temperatures which hit 29C Bentley came back from behind to win a thrilling opening fixture against DronfieldTown’s Second XI.

Both sides could have had a hat full of goals, both missed chances and both custodians pulled off a string of important saves.

Bentley dominated the first eleven minutes.  Matty Hughes was through and shot wide across goal on four minutes; Josh Street, clear, saw Steven Booth save with his legs six minutes later, and then MATTY HUGHES made up for his earlier miss by sweeping the home side ahead on eleven minutes after skipper Jack Varley’s shot had been blocked.

Within a minute LUIS FAVIO AFONZO FERRERO’s lob had left home custodian James Brookes off his line and beaten to level things up.  Parity then lasted a further two minutes before Fernandes found a defence splitting pass which sent TYRONE O’KANE clear to put the visitors in front.

Savage at one end and Fernandes at the other both saw chances slip away and the lively Tyrone O’Kane was stopped in his tracks by what appeared to be a dubious off side decision.

Fernandes was the guilty party pushing over Josh Street on 36 minutes but Jack Varley blasted the resultant penalty high over the bar.  And Varley then put Street clear to hit the angle of bar and post before the break.

Jordan Willis put Luis Fabio Afonzo Ferrero through early in the second half but Brookes saved with his legs and Ethan Flower put the rebound wide of an open goal.

JOSH STREET, chasing as long ball he should have put away much earlier in the run, was credited with the 54th minute leveller when an attempted clearance hit him and the ball finished up in the net.

Chances continued to come and go at both ends.  Varley saw his free kick deflected for a corner; Street’s attempted overhead was a foot over; Varley showed great control from a throw in then shot straight at Booth and Courtney Peynado brought an instant save from Booth as Bentley pressed for a winner.  At the other end James Beardow headed narrowly over at a corner and Charlie Stewart blasted a late chance both high and wide.

But it was JACK VARLEY, making up for his earlier penalty miss, who sidefooted home the winner with three minutes of normal time left after Hughes had provided the run and cross.

All things considered this was a great advert for Central Midlands League football.
