First League Game - The Green Army fall over the line

05 August 2018

The 2018/19 season opener at The Avenue. We entertained Dronfield Town Reserves.

KT was forced into a couple of changes with Gary & Shaun Mundy not available (wedding). Maddo working.

Luke Flannigan came straight back into the fray after injury and Matty Hughes started up front after suffering a knee tweek during our PSF with Beverley Town.

Dronfield made the early running and were unlucky to go behind Matty Hughes raced onto a through ball and lashed home. Within seconds Dronfield responded and capitalised on a jittery defence to equalise. They took the lead within two minutes again nervous defending and a couple of errors cost the home team. 15 minutes gone we had seen 3 goals and Bentley found themselves behind.

New captain Jake Varley missed a golden opportunity to level things up on 26 minutes when the lively Josh Street was pushed over in the box. Unfortunatel JMV blasted the ball over the bar.

Half Time 1-2

A defensive tweak by KT meant we looked a lot better at the back at the start of the 2nd half. As you would expect Bentley made the running and did create a few chances. It took till well over the hour mark for the equaliser  the sharp and dangerous Street out ran the defenders and slipped the ball home 2-2.

Dronfield responded well and caused the home team a few issues. It took till the 86th minute for the winner. Jack Varley made up for the earlier penalty miss when he slotted home a Matty Hughes cross after a good move down the right hand side. Bentley delirious - Dronfield gutted!

FT 3-2

goals - Hughes, Street & Varley
